Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
August 14th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.

Reinhold Schwarzwald. Alto saxophonist with a combo of piano, drums, guitar and bass. This international performing & recording jazz artist expresses the soulful and passionate "voice" of the saxophone with an electric mix of R&B, Pop, Brazilian and Bossa Nova. Co-sponsored by Barich & Associates.

Loaded with prime instrumental jazz talent, the ensemble of Reinhold Schwarzwald and friends will perform at the Redlands Bowl for the Summer Music Festival on Tuesday, August 14, at 8:15 p.m. With piano, drums, guitar, and bass, Schwarzwald brings his saxophone "voice" to the stage to perform a mix of jazz, R and B, Pop, and Bossa Nova. Between their intensive recording and performing schedules, the ensemble--Patrice Rushen on keyboard, Del Atkins on bass, Curt Bisquera on drums, Ray Fuller on guitar, and Schwarzwald on sax--finds a tiny window of time to collaborate and produce extraordinary music. The program, never quite set until they take to the stage, will consist of an eclectic mix of Schwarzwald's own music and works by Ray Charles, Leon Russell, Erich
Clapton, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Gershwin. According to manager (and wife) Petra Schwarzwald, "It's difficult to get the program out of my artist."

Following in the footsteps of his musician father, Schwarzwald, a native of Austria, began studying instruments at age 8. He studied music throughout Europe before settling in Paris to jump into the international music scene. Since then, he has recorded a CD with his composition "All Your Love", for which he won "Best Instrumental Song of the Year" at the International Song Expo Awards in 1998. He has played at the most prestigious international festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Vienna Jazz Festival, and he has performed on television shows in Europe and broadcast on European radio stations. Since his arrival in the Southern California music world, Schwarzwald has connected with multi-Grammy-nominated artist, Patrice
Rushen. Claiming composing credit for "Men In Black", Rushen has repeatedly broken ground as a music producer/director by serving as head composer/musical director for the Emmy Awards, for the NAACP Image Awards, for the People's Choice Awards, and Newsweek's "American Achievement Awards, broadcast from the Kennedy Center. Considered one of the world's top jazz pianists, Rushen has performed with Stevie Wonder, Prince, Lionell Hampton, Carlos Santana, Boys II Men, Michael Jackson, and Sheena Easton. She has 14 solo albums to her credit and a greatest hits anthology released
on Rhino Records in 1997. Rushen will soon be seen as the host of Clint Eastwood's Malpaso Productions "40 Years of the Monterey Jazz Festival" which will air on cable and be released on DVD.

The rest of Schwarzwald's friends are equally linked to stars. Del Atkins on bass has toured with legendary artists such as Hank Crawford, Les McCann, and Lou Rawls. Curt Bisquera on Drums has worked with Paula Abdul, Johnny Cash, Celine Dion, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Ricky Marty, Donny Osmond, Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, and Billy Joe Walker, Jr. On guitar, A. Ray "The Weeper" Fuller has toured with the Staple Singers, performed with Anita Baker and Natalie Cole, and recorded with Branford Marsalis, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, and Quincy Jones.

For the Redlands Bowl concert, Schwarzwald has tied these talented mega-musicians together into a solid unit of music magic. This concert is co-sponsored by Barich & Associates. Intermission speaker will be Karen E. Holmes, Executive Director, Redlands Community Music Association, Inc. Intermission ushers will be members of Redlands Association of Realtors.

On Tuesday afternoon at 3:00, Schwarzwald and friends will present the Children's Festival Workshop at the First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands.

Curtiss Allen Sr. will lead the Community Sing at 7:20 in the Bowl. Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival events are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
