Redlands Bowl 2001 Season
July 17th
Programs start at 8:15 p.m.

Universal Ballet. A program of "Classical Ballet Masterpieces" blending the grace and harmony of Asian thought and culture with the strength and beauty of western classical ballet.

Headquartered in Korea, performing classical Russian ballet with an international company of dancers, Universal Ballet owns up to its name. And the ballet company comes to the Redlands Bowl on Tuesday, July 17, at 8:15 p.m. as part of the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. Founded in Seoul in 1984, Universal Ballet strives to present the finest classical ballet in the Kirov tradition, which, according to spokesperson Sunny Ashe, is in the pure classical Russian tradition dating to the 1800s.

Artistic Director Oleg Vinogradov, connected to Universal Ballet since 1990, preserves the ballets of the Russian legacy while introducing audiences to more contemporary western choreographers. Vinogradov graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy with classmate Rudolf Nureyev,
choreographed for two years with the Bolshoi Ballet, and served since 1977 as artistic director for the Kirov Ballet.

For the Redlands Bowl, Universal Ballet will send an ensemble of 25 to 30 dancers to perform a blend of classical works, contemporary works, and character pieces not seen before in this area. One piece, based on an
American theme and choreographed by former artistic director Bruce Steivel, incorporates a blues style. Dancers will perform Vinogradov's work, to Barber's Adagio for Strings, about Adam and Eve and the projection of beauty and sweetness. A piece performed to another adagio, this one by Albinoni, will depict man's struggle to find freedom in his life. Universal Ballet recently performed at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and will present two full length ballets at the Music Center in Los Angeles later in July.

In the afternoon, members of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra will present a Petting Zoo for the Children's Festival Workshop. This program will be presented at the First Congregational Church, 2 W. Olive Avenue in Redlands, at 3:00 p.m.

Intermission speaker for the evening's event will be Mary Petite, City of Redlands Cost Recovery/Community Development Block Grant Administrator. Intermission ushers will be representatives from Habitat for Humanity and members of Redlands Knights of the Round Table.
The Community Sing, led by Curtiss Allen, Sr., will begin at 7:20 p.m. Continuing the tradition begun in 1924, this and all Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival events are open to the public at no charge, and a free-will offering will be collected at intermission.
