The scene is jammin’ at the Royal Falconer British Pub on Wednesday nights. Every Wednesday night they host an "open mike" for solo musicians, and groups that can fit onto their small stage at the front the restaurant. No auditions, no big speeches about the musicians’ latest gigs, no stuffy formality – just the musicians showcasing their talents.

This is a very unpretentious venue for seeing our local talent play. Some are very polished, and some, well aren’t so polished. But the aura of the evening is loose with musicians talking amongst each other and fidgeting with their instruments, and patrons enjoying the variety of music and chatting with friends. The musicians are very loose and play to the audience. Which often develops into a sense of camaraderie between the audience and the musicians who are regulars at this event. Depending on how many are on the list that has signed up to play that night, each solo or group will be able to play 3 or 4 songs. The transition between events moves quite quickly. Recently while there, the musicians were mostly solos and duos – voice and guitar, or only guitars. There was quite a mix from Irish folk to acoustic guitar. I’ve been told they have had bagpipes and even a full marching band - so the evening can hold some surprises.

The Falconer is known for its extensive British fare featuring favorites including Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, Shepard’s Pie, Steak and Kidney Pie and their special Falconer Four Pepper Steak. But for an evening like this you might be more interested in their appetizers, Falconer Hot Wings, Falcon Talons, Nachos, Zucchini strips, and their house special – Bahvosk, a 15" crisp American cracker bread covered with Jack Cheese and house salsa. They also have 20 beers on tap and another 30 types of bottled beer.

This event that starts at 8:30 p.m. and ends when they run out of musicians (usually about 11:00 p.m.), and it draws an audience throughout the evening. Midway through the evening, it becomes standing room only and the pub is a buzz with activity and conversation. During the summer with its great evening weather, one can step out front and talk with the musicians and other patrons.

So if you are looking for something different on Wednesday evening try the Royal Falconer British Pub. Where you’ll be treated to a variety of musicians featuring good entertainment.
