While Joe Greensleeve's has been a restaurant for over
20 years and is in the historic Board of Trade building
on Orange Street, there is a good chance you have overlooked
it. From the outside they project a certain formality about
them as compared to the other neighboring restaurants, however
once inside you'll find they are very inviting and are not
pretentious. As I approached Greensleeve's for lunch the
other day, I felt that by wearing a polo shirt I may have
been underdressed - I was pleasantly surprised to see only
one person wearing a tie. The atmosphere is very comfortable
- the wood, earth-tone accents, and soft lighting. It sets
the atmosphere for intimate dining and good conversation.
Everything is prepared onsite, from the freshest of ingredients.
The Chef is Umberto from the former Umberto's restaurant
in town. He and his wife have owned and been running Greensleeve's
for the past few years. They enjoy having the ability to
run a smaller restaurant, and providing a greater personal
touch for their patrons and having more control over food
quality and preparation.
While there for lunch, I noticed service was very prompt
and their lunch menu reflects the time constraints required
of the workday. The Soups and Appetizers offer a good variety
to start a meal and range in price from $4.50 to $9.50.
Of particular note was their Soup of Two Soups. In the same
bowl, but presented side-by-side was herbed tomato bisque
and puree of minestrone. The side-by-side red/green color
of each soup made for an eye appealing presentation. The
flavors of each soup were good independent of each other,
and also mixed together - the flavors of 3 soups in one
bowl. They also offer salads for lunch, which range from
$4.95 - $12.50. I had the Cobb salad in which I could tell
that all the ingredients were freshly prepared. I liked
the deviation from the traditional Ranch Dressing to Bleu
Cheese with crumbled Gorgonzola cheese. Greensleeve's adjusts
their menu about every 6 - 9 months to accommodate the feedback
from their customers - this being one of them. There is
also a sandwich and burger selection from $5.99 - $9.50
which includes: Croissant sandwich, Turkey sandwich, Philly
Steak sandwich (made with prime rib), Grilled Chicken sandwich,
Club sandwich, Crab sandwich - the sandwiches come with
fresh fruit and side salad, Joe's "Old Fashioned"
Burger (but the meat is from strips of filet mignon) and
the "Giant" Porto Bello Mushroom Burger. The pasta
selection ranges from $7.95 - $12.50 and includes: Penne
Salmon, Seafood Fettuccine, Spinach Ravioli, Ravioli Mushrooms,
Pennette Pasta and Gnocchi. They offer 4 entrees ranging
in price from $12.50 - $13.95: Chicken "Umberto"(breast
of chicken with spinach, mozzarella, prosciutto in a Madiera
wine sauce), Chicken Marsala, Salmon and Joe's Sirloin Steak.
Greensleeve's serves dinner starting at 5:00 p.m. While
their west facing windows allows a great deal of natural
light in during the day, that after sunset their low lighting
creates a very intimate setting for evening dining.
The evening's soups and appetizers range in price from
$4.95 - $12.50. There is plenty of flavors offered from
the Soup of Two Soups to Louisiana Frog Legs, Wild Boar
Sausage and the Green Sleeve (a roasted Anaheim chile stuffed
with venison and Sonoma goat cheese with smoked corn sauce
and diced tomatoes). The salads range from $4.95 - $9.50
including dinner salads to Shrimp and Greek salads. They
offer 4 pastas ranging from $14.50 - $19.50. These are:
Penne (vegetarian), Mushroom Ravioli, Seafood Fettuccini
and Butterfly Pasta. Now this is where it becomes really
tasty. The majority of the dinner entrees are grilled over
orange wood imparting a richness to the meats. The entrée
menu ranges in price from $16.95 - $29.95. They have 3 steak
offerings: Filet Mignon, New York Steak and the Delmonico
Steak. Each steak comes with a choice of the following sauces:
green peppercorn brandy crème, caramelized with garlic
and shallots, and Dijon mustard with green peppercorns.
Their other entrees are: Chicken Marsala, Spring Lamb Chops,
Filet of Medallion, Steak of Prime Rib, One Half of Mallard
Duck, Elk chop, Veal Chop, Tenderloin of Iowa Pork, Filet
of Fresh North Atlantic Salmon, Lagostino Grill and Medley
of Fresh Fish.
Joe Greensleeve's, which is housed in the landmark Board
of Trade building, offers fine dining without the pretentiousness
one might expect. True to the roots of its long history
and attention to detail from Chef Umberto, you will find
intimate ambiance and food for the discerning palate. As
a treat, call them regarding their monthly wine and food
pairings dinner evenings.
