Redlands Bowl Mission Gables
4/27/05 by Ron Burgess
Redlands' Mission Gables is finally moving, but not too far. It was moved in February about 30 feet from its original foundation and has been moved back to a new one, although several feet higher than the original one.
For a decade or more the Mission Gables building adjacent to the Redlands Bowl has been waiting for funding to restore and re-use it for other purposes. A residence since the late 1890’s, it has been targeted by local preservationists and the Redlands Music Association as the logical place for multiple activities.
The new basement will house larger restrooms for Redlands Bowl attendees. The re-adapted house will have an office and musician practice rooms. The backyard will be transformed into a patio for outdoor activities associated with performances.
But these niceties don’t come cheaply! The breathtaking cost of 1.3 million dollars makes the project one of the most expensive adaptive reuses in Redlands. With several funding sources such as fundraising by the Redlands Conservancy, a US community block grant of $200,000 and city funds, the permanent preservation of Mission Gables is insured next to the historic Redlands Bowl.

Mission Gable sits on railroad ties and steel I-beams in the “backyard” waiting for its new foundation.

Pulled forward slowly by a crane, it sits directly over the new basement restrooms.

A worker uses a plumb line to position the front right corner.

Oops! 4 inches off! Actually the building is twisted slightly causing the variance. When the building is finally set on the foundation it will be twisted and pulled back into shape.
