The 21st Annual Redlands Bicycle Classic - Read Complete Story
Official Redlands Bicycle Classic Website

Since 1985, not too long after the Summer Olympics, the city of Redlands decided to gather a plan and start a professional bike race. The races did not attract many professionals when they were first initiated, since many bicyclists were around the world competing. The first professionals to race in the Redlands Bicycle Classic, included several members of the U.S. team and they were the highlight of the events, taking home all 4 awards. An event that was started in 1985 with a budget of about $14,000 is now an event that has a $55,000 combined budget for both men and women.

The Redlands Bicycle Classic is proud to celebrate 21 years as one of America’s best road stage racing. These races have been the openers for road cycling in the United States and many professionals have followed this tradition. This 4-day event does not only limit its fame to bicyclists in the United States, but many worldwide professionals as well have joined the best in Redlands, California. The race has attracted more people every year for its variety of races, events and terrain. The race is open to everyone in age groups ranging from 3 years old to adults, depending on category. With such an array of competitors, the Redlands Bicycle Classic has attracted many spectators, also making it an atmosphere for family gatherings with great festivities hosted by locals in historic downtown Redlands.

Power on Redlands - More Information

“Power on Redlands” is the theme for the opening ceremonies of the 2005 Redlands Festival Series. This year’s greatly expanded venues will officially kick off on April 2, 2005. "Power on Redlands" is a play on words about the real event that put Redlands in the forefront of electrical power generation over a century ago. In fact, a little known event on September 7th 1892 shaped the municipal power standards for the entire world!

This was the day that Mill Creek No.1 was started up, and proved for the first time that a complete electrical power system could deliver power for all electrical devices and lighting in one seamless system. It would take the likes of Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nicola Tesla several more years to accomplish the same feat.

But unfortunate circumstances, and the publicity machines of General Electric and Westinghouse would shape the popular historical viewpoint. Mr. Ron Burgess will have the rest of the story as the speaker for the opening ceremonies.
